Ben had a great sense of humor and contributed a very funny anecdotal story about his upcoming 50th anniversary as a ham to CQ Magazine. We offer it here with their kind permission.
Ben was known as the Original DID, receiving K9DID as his assigned call in 1957. As soon as vanity calls were opened to all hams, our entire family became a DID and boy, DID we ever have fun with that! There were many times where we would be communicating via the computer while we all lined up on a DX station’s frequency to work them one, two, three DIDs in a row! We sure were tickled when some stations enjoyed our shenanigans. We were even asked once, “Three DIDS? How is this possible?”
Ben was a huge supporter of AMSAT and the ARRL. He was a VEC and lifetime member of the Northeast Wisconson DX Association.
